Great US History Resources For Teachers

Read along as we discover some great history resources for those teachers who are looking for some super information to give to their students.

One of the first places to visit is the Rockingham County Public Schools site. They have some great links to other neat sites and internal link within their site to more interesting information. On their pages you will find information on Native Americans, the American Revolution, the Civil War, World War Two, Colonial America and the Constitution. Of particular interest is the nice way the three forms of government are laid out. You can teach some good lessons from a site like this as well as learn some yourself. You can find the Rockingham County Public School site at; mce.k12tn.net/history/historypages.htm.

The second place to find some some lesson materials is at "The History Place". Here is a place where you will find material on Apollo Elven, the first moon landing. You will also find more Civil War history, a listing of the presidents of the United States, the Vietnam War, the American Revolution with a six part chronoligical timeline, and a timeline of the Civil War. You will also find the photos of Edward S. Curtis. He was a photographer of the Native American people West of the Mississippi before he was decimated by the White man. One of their featured links is the "Photo of the week". They also have "Speech of the week". Of particular interest is the speech of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and how it is presented on their site. You can find this history website at historyplace.com.

One of the sites that can not be recommended is Wikipedia.org. This is a site that is edited by anyone and everyone. If a six year old arrives at this site and rearranges it, no one is the wiser. You will want to stick to reputable sites that have notable owners and writers.

Please remember that the United States is undergoing a cultural war at the moment and the history books are being "adjusted" accordingly. If you can find a site with unedited information from before the civil war, you will do good. This is going to be hard to do, but not impossible. One good tip is to look for individual state sites that
will not show up in google searches. These sites are going to have more accurate and therfore more reliable information.

A different type of web site is dedicated to the oral history of the men who won World War Two. They have a goal of preserving "human history" by examining oral histories of those special groups who were the top achievers of the War that some countries call "The Great Patriotic War". They have "walk through" museum that you can access there. They have photos of the remarkable event of Civil War veterans meeting and shaking hands at Gettysburg in 1913. This is a great World War Two site that you can find at thedropzone.org.
