Exam Study

When studying for a test, there are many techniques that people use to achieve success. One of the most common techniques is cramming at the last minute. While some students insist that it works and keeps the material fresh on their brain, studies show that it is just not as effective as other techniques. Crammers almost always have gaps in their knowledge base, leading them to try to frantically catch up before the exam materials are due. However, this stressful approach leads to poor study skills and lower grades. There are much better ways to be successful.

At the foundation of a good program of study skills is your exam materials. First, you will have your text books and study guides. Most teachers provide an overview of the course material and this is the map for your class. Use this material. It’s there for a reason. If your teacher allows you to record classes, take advantage of that. It’s like having audio notes at your fingertips. As you are driving around, pop in the particular CD from a class that you don’t feel as confident with. You can rerun the entire lecture, so to speak and further cement the concepts that alluded you the first time.

Refer to your written notes as you listen, if you can. Finally, there are many online and computer resources that can help you study. Keep in mind that many people have trouble retaining what they read on a screen, so these tools may be best used as an interactive way to brush up on basic skills. Think learning games and quizzes.
