Security jobs are getting popular since September 11th. If you are thinking about getting a job with the TSA, you should get prepared by reading this article.
The first thing to do to prepare for the TSA exam is to get online and see what others are saying. If you get online and see that the general news is that screeners will be needed in the Spring and Summer, do you know what year it is ? Getting online and doing searches in google for what others are saying can be deceiving. They could be saying that the TSA was hiring in the Spring of Summer of 2003 ! Be sure you do not just read the google results, but actually click on the links in google and check out the years and other pertinent information.
The second thing to do is remember that the exam is only three weeks long. One in twenty applicants that take the TSA exam will succeed. The three weeks includes on the job training. This makes the exam process that much easier. You will probably be screening packages or humans, but not both. Again, this is a great deal for you, since it takes even more training.
Preparing for the TSA exam does require a credit check. Is your credit good ? If not, you may have a question about why you are not accepted if you have bad credit. This is to help the TSA maintain its credibility. If screeners were in bad financial shape, they would be more prone to giving in to bribes. This is a very real security measure undertaken by the TSA to prevent security breaches. If screeners were easy to bribe, the level of security would go down. To prevent this, TSA requires credit checks of those looking to work with them.
If you have an aversion to the common rectal exam you may want to think about seeking a different line of work other than the TSA. They more than likely will require a complete physical exam. Remember that word; "complete". If you also keep in mind that when the TSA says you need to go through a "series of tests" you will not get a second chance. Tolerance for failure is set to "zero".
Since you would be a government employee, you also must consider that you will not be under the current "minimum wage" law.
That does not mean you will make less than minimum wage working for the TSA. A current job opening for a Transportation Security Officer is starting at $28,626 dollars per year. That is just over $2000 a month. If this is suitable for you, great. If this will not pay the bills you may want to consider other jobs.
The other requirements to prepare for the TSA exam are that you must be a U.S Citizen or a U.S National. Some criminal offenses will disqualify you from working with the TSA. Forgery of certificates, false marking of aircraft, and other offenses related to aircraft will prevent you from passing or even being considered for the TSA exam. Other aircraft related offenses are also included, such as aircraft piracy.
The current (2009 ) type of employment is part time. There are eighty one jobs listed with the usajobs site and this is December. Perhaps one of them will be yours if you have prepared for the exam successfully.
