How To Get Certified As An Insurance Agent

If you are a good salesman or saleslady, you may want to look into getting a job as an insurance agent. Insurance agents make a percentage of the sales of a policy and can also make a residual income later. If this is something that you are interested in, take a quick look at this article.
One of the first things you need to become certified as an insurance agent is desire to succeed. It is a prerequisite. No one wants to have a defeated, broken down person visiting them or trying to sell them something. You must have the burning desire to better your life and help others in the process. You are not going to be a successful insurance agent even if you do manage to get certified. If you do not have the ability to maintain a healthy balanced point of view on the world and your own circumstances, how are you going to help others ? Consider your attitude to be credential number one for becoming an insurance salesman.
The next thing to do is to attend a college or other school and to obtain a Bachelor´s degree. A degree in some social area will be good, as well as the area of business. It is true that Insurance companies do not require much in the way of education. But your opportunities open up if you have some professional education. Some insurance companies do not require you to know anything about insurance to work for them. All they want is a warm body with a smile and a desire to make money. If you want to start here, that would probably be the easiest way to begin a quest to become certified as an insurance agent.
The next thing to do is to find out what courses your state ( if you live in the United States ) will require for you to become certified. The state will hopefully be interested in your ethical and legal background and an exam will reflect this. You will need to know a plethora of different categories of insurance. If you just want to sell one type and already know what that is, good for you. Here are just a few categories :
- Health
- General
- Annuities
- Life
- Auto
- Business
As with many courses, the internet can offer you a way to learn via your computer. You will need to be careful to make sure you are using an accredited group or school. If you use a school that is not accredited, you may just be losing time and money for a worthless certificate that will not get you a job.
A better way is to get a list of accredited schools in your state that give distance learning or that are near you. See if they can send your insurance course through the mail. If so, you can study on your own schedule, which is a blessing. If you are a quick learner the course may only take a few weeks. You can be ready to take your exam before the month is over. After you pass the exam you are ready to launch into your career as a certified insurance salesman.
