How To Get Certified As An Entomologist

Submitted by: TigerEye

This career field is a cross between a zoologist and a person who focuses on insects. If this is something you are seeking to become there are ways to get certified in this job. Take a look here and learn a bit about this process.

Given that there are perhaps thousand of different categories and types of insects a person will need to decide to "scale down" to studying insects. Studying all the categories is usually too much for one person. If you already like a certain type of insect and want to be  an entomologist, choose that type of insect and you will be happier.

For starters, some entomologists are employed as "forensic" entomologists. That means they are busy identifying the type of bugs that are found on murder victims and other dead people. If this is not your bag, do not worry, there are plenty of other jobs for an entomologist. Begin as soon as you can, ( you probably already have ) in showing an interest in insects. Get all the knowledge about the little six legged creatures as you can before you actually start a proper course to study them. When you are in high school take the higher science classes including biology.

You will need to get a Bachelor's degree in Science and later a Master's degree in a related field.  Some schools, such as Virginia Tech offer a Master's course in the life sciences with a concentration on entomology. The run a department of entomology that has attention on the insect genomic and public health. They include studies on mosquitoes and their biology. They also cover human and animal disease as related to insects. Protection and monitoring of the environment is a part of the courses at Virginia Tech.

A tip for getting ahead in this field is to start your own business. You can help the police identify insects. You can help others who are trying to get rid of bugs identify them. Show yourself as a professional information source on insects and you will be able to make a bit of cash while you are learning.

If you live in the United States, you can join the North American Forensic Entomology Association. They deal with forensic technology, but it is again a proof that you have connections and professional interests in insects. They have members from other areas of science, not just entomology.

There is one more organization to become a part of. The "Amateur Entomologists Society" is available to join. They make the point that some of the greatest entomologists have been amateurs, not professionals. This means you have some hope. You will surely like being a member of this group, since they are less formal than some other groups. Your ambitions will hopefully take you to the level of Doctor of Entomology. This will put you into a small group of people who will be in very high demand in the world. Take your interest in insects seriously  and those little creatures can take you a long way.
