How To Get Certified As An Energy Auditor

Submitted by: TigerEye

In this day of the ever-present false ecologic themes it has become important to keep track of total amounts of electricity usage. The popular term "carbon footprint" needs to be governed. If you want to take advantage of this deplorable activity look into getting certified as an energy auditor.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics says that the job of an energy auditor is an emerging occupation. That is good for you if you like such a category of work. You must go through the normal schooling such as high school. You will want to also get a bachelor´s degree in some area such as engineering or architecture. You will need three years of experience in these areas to continue to prepare for a certification as an energy auditor. If you just have two years of job experience, rather than three you will need some different handling of your time.

The Association of Energy Engineers is the place to look for your ultimate certification. Some of the objectives of this organization is to :

  • Give special recognition to those who demonstrate high levels of competence
  • Identify people with the knowledge of the principles and practices of auditing
  • Improve the practice of energy auditors
  • Raise the professional standards of energy auditors

If you have ten years of identifiable experience in energy auditing energy management or other related experience you will be considered as a prospect for certification in the field of energy auditing. Once you are accepted, you will become a "Certified Energy Auditor in Training" or CEAIT. You must have a four year degree in engineering and a passing score with the certified energy auditor exam.

The first step to applying for a certified auditor exam ( CEA ) is to register for a seminar with the Association of Energy Engineers ( AEE). The name of this seminar is the "Fundamentals of Energy Auditing" training program. A complete application must be received within three weeks before the seminar starts. It should be noted that attending a seminar does not guarantee you will get to take the CEA.

If you can not attend a live seminar, you can take an online one. It has a different name; "Certified Energy Auditor Preparatory Training Program". This is a six day, twelve hour program that earns you points toward getting a chance at an exam. Some of the prices that are included with your seminars and such are as follows:

  • $1250 for a live seminar if you are an AEE member
  • $1350 for a live seminar if you are not an AEE member
  • $995 for an online seminar if you are an AEE member
  • $1095 for an online seminar if you are a not an AEE member

A detailed description of the seminar syllabus is included on the AEE web site. The basic outline is:

  • Building envelope
  • Lighting systems
  • Air conditioner systems
  • Heating systems
  • Motors and drives
  • Ventilation systems
  • Domestic hot water systems
  • Water conservation and audits
  • Utility analysis

After completing a seminar or the online alternative you will need to go to the Association of Energy Engineers web site to complete your exam application. If you take the three day live seminar the CEA exam will be an open book test. If you take the online choice, you will need to report to a testing facility to take your exam. Once you pass, you will awarded the title of certified energy auditor.
