How To Get Certified As An Apartment Manager

If you know the perks of being an apartment manager, you will be interested in doing this job. If you do not own your own land or house, look into being an apartment manager for a place to live while being friends ( hopefully ) with the landlord. You will be managing many of those people who have lost their homes and lands from the recent United States depression.

This career field is expanding in the United States. It is recommended that if you want to do this for a living that you work fast to get in. For now, you will need at least an high school education. Get some studies in business management if you can while you are in high school if you are still there. A gentle reminder is that you need to be eighteen or older to be certified as an apartment manager.

The next step after high school is real estate classes. Real estate training is not that hard and you will be able to breeze through this stage without a problem. You will learn about how a lease works, how marketing works, financing, human relations ( you will need to be a good people person ) and property management. If you need some courses to prepare for your certification, the IREM ( Institute of Real Estate Management ) is a good place to start for property ( apartment ) managers. The IREM calls themselves the "benchmark for excellence in education and training".

You will be charged one of three different rates by the IREM when you take their courses. The first is the premier member rate. This applies to CPM members and candidates, ARM members, ACOM members, and AMO firm employees. CPM stands for Certified Property Manager. The second is a Classic member rate that applies to associate members, student members and academic members. The third is the nonmember rate.

When you take their exam you will also be given an ethics exam. Morals seem to be important to the IREM. You can take the exam online or at your college or junior college. Once you pass the exams you will be receiving your certification for apartment manager. Before you will be allowed to take the general exam for apartment manager, you will be required to take the "Ethics of Real Estate Managers" course and pass it. The IREM site is maze of pages and hard to discern what the total prices are for their courses. As with most certfication groups, you will pay more for not being a member of the IREM.

You will want to be associated with professional groups to help you have retention and re-employment if you should lose your job after your certification. The job outlook for this category is ultra high, thanks to the failing economy. Those property owners who do not want to deal with renters will be looking for apartment managers with a high degree of motivation.
