If you are looking to get into the burgeoning airport security market now is the time to get started. The details on what you need to have to get certified as a TSA Screener are here in this article.
The first thing you will need to be certified for the TSA is your proof of US Citizenship. If you were not born in the United States you will need to be a naturalized citizen with documents to prove it. Becoming a naturalized citizen has its own set of requirments. You must be at least eighteen years of age, be of good moral character without an extensive crime record, can speak, read and write English, understand and have an attachment to the US Constitution and have been in the USA for a provable amount of time.
You will also need to have a high school diploma or the equivalent of that, which is called a "GED". You can replace this requirment with one year of full-time work in security or as a previous screener dealing with airports. If you have X-ray technician work, this is also a big plus.
The next point is the background investigation process. You must be able to pass this and a credit check. What is the reason for a credit check ? The job you are applying for is a high security job and people who have bad credit are more likely to be tempted to accept bribes than those who do not have bad credit. Lives are on the line, and you would be on the front line. Therefore you must be willing and able to resist bribes.
You will be given alcohol and drug tests. If you can not pass this part of the TSA certification, you can not be a screener. Drugs and alcohol have no place in a security job and the TSA is not any different. There are also certain physical requirements also. The physical requirments are related to handling and screening of airport bags.
There are tests to take.
There is a forty hour line up of classroom training to go through. Your prior experience as a security technician will help you during this time. There are sixty hours of OJT or on-the-job training. There is the examination for utlimate certification to pass.
To initiate the process to certification you will need to get online or to call a toll free number. The number is 877-631-5627, and it is recommended that you do not use a cellphone to call the number. If you want to relocate to the area where you prefer to work, TSA will not provide the money to do so.
Being a part of security personnel is a rewarding and exciting job. There is no end to the different scenarios that you will encounter as a security agent for any company, the TSA included. Getting your certification as a TSA screener is for a person who recognizes these facts and is ready to take on adversity every day.
