You are concerned about the way youth are headed and you want to help. What can you do for them ? While it was the parents who were partly to blame, they are not the total problem. The atmosphere a child grows up in affects them greatly. You can help improve that atmosphere by being a friend that lends a helping hand to those youths that need it. What you will need first is your own high school diploma. If you can take some classes on child rearing or happen to have your own children, you will have some valuable experience to show the world. Psychology classes are also valuable, or experience with children in children´s hospitals.

A large step to take toward becoming certified as a juvenile detention officer is to take classes in criminal justice. These classes teach you the basics of law and what can happen to adults and children alike who run afoul of the law. You should also have a volunteer status at a Boys and Girls club or teen homeless shelter. You probably have openings at a juvenile corrections center near you if you live in a large city in the United States. Any background experience you can show that you have worked in some capacity counseling school-aged children will be a plus. The classes in criminal justice are like icing on the cake.

If you can not attend criminal justice classes for some reason look on craigslist.org or in the paper for jobs that are close to this category.

If you happen upon an employer who gives classes to those whom they hire see if you can apply with them. You may need to pass some form of physical fitness checks to work with them, but more than likely they will not be strenous.

You will be required to take part in a background screening. This will be a check of your former criminal history and a test of your urine for the presence of drugs. If you are not able to pass these, you may be disqualified from getting certified.

Some of the things you will be required to know about before you are certified as a detention officer are :

  • Supervising Juveniles
  • Searching and Maintaining Security
  • Investigating and Detecting Problems
  • Analyzing and Making Recommendations
  • Report Writing
  • Record Keeping
  • Handling Emergencies
  • Counseling
  • Interacting/Communicating with Juveniles
  • Interacting/Communicating with People External to Staff
  • Working with Internal Staff
  • Performing Physically Demanding Work

Your county or state government will give you an examination that will likely include a multiple choice paper exam. In some circumstances, you will take a test using a computer. Whichever form of examination you are given will be determined by the state you live in. Once you pass you will be rewarded with the title of juvenile detention officer.
