How To Get Certified As A Ham Radio Operator

While some are using their cellphones to talk around the world, others have been doing this for twenty or more years without cell phones. They are Ham Operators, otherwise known as Amateur Radio Operators. You can become one in a short length of time.

An "amateur" radio operator differs from a commercial radio operator in that they do not get money for their services. If you are looking to do this as a job, you will want to rethink this aspect. Nevertheless, becoming a Ham radio operator is a rewarding project that will allow you to speak to people all over the world.

You will not need to study morse code anymore to become certified as a Ham radio operator. It use to be that way to pass the exam, you needed to be able to send messages in morse code; a set of "dits" or "dashes" that represent letters. That requirement ended in 2007. The test to become an operator is obtained by taking a test from the Federal Communications Commission, if you are in the United States.

One of the first things to do is to become a member of a local Amateur Radio club. You will probably find a group of like-minded individuals who like helping people and being on the "air". If one takes you under his wing, he will be called your "Elmer". That is Ham-talk for "helper" or "guide".

The second thing to do is to start reading. Self-study is the most popular way to get a Ham radio certification. If you commit every evening you have to studying for your certification, it is possible you could have it within a couple of weeks. Having a background in electronics is a good way to pass the test with flying colors the first time.

What do you study ? You will be entering the world of Ham radio at the first level; technician. So, you will want to get reliable study information for a technician´s license. One good place to do this is the American Radio and Relay League. They are also known as the ARRL. The Gordon West Radio School is another place to get quality help and study material. Look them up at w5yi.org. You may be surprised at the variety and volume of material of material available online if you take a look in the right places.

Once you have done your studying and your Elmer has been convinced that you are ready to take the exam, look up a place to take it. You can do that at the American Radio and Relay League´s website. They are at arrl.org. The test has thirty five questions and is in the multiple choice format. You must get seventy percent correct to pass. If you look online and especially at those sites listed in this article, you can find online practice tests that will help out a lot.

The exam fee will be fourteen dollars. After passing your exam, you will be ready to get "online" with Amateur ( Ham ) radio operators around the world.
