If your career goals involve getting a certification as an Information Systems Security Professional you will need to know what is required for this task. Here we will talk about getting a certification for the title of "Certified Information Systems Security Professional" or CISSP.

One of the first requirements is to maintain the idea that the task you will be performing is to help people. Having this certification is analagous to joining a group of professionals, not a group of vigilantes. The second thing is to have four to five years of verifiable and professional computer security experience. You can also have just four years and a college degree. You can also present an advanced degree from a National Center of Excellence. An equivalent degree from your district may also help towards getting the five year limit satisfied. You then will finish the candidate agreement. This is a pre-exam that shows your professional credentials. You will become bound legally to hold to a CISSP set of guidelines. After this, you must answer four questions about your criminal background and related areas.

If you qualify you will be able to take the test. The exam has a lower limit of seven hundred points. If you score less than this you will not pass. You must meet more qualifications for experience mentioned above. You must submit a form of endorsment. If you are selected for an audit you must also pass the audit.

The endorsement section has a form that  provides for a recommendation from another person who already has their CISSP.

They must be able to testify of your experience and professionalism. They themselves must be in good standing with a group called the ISC. If you are randomly selected for an audit. This is a call for more information concerning verification. You will be explaining more about how you got your computer security experience. If you can not find someone to endorse you it is still possible to pass this section. The formerly mentioned group called the "ISC" will endorse you.

After you pass the CISSP exam you will need to keep it current. Computer security changes with the wind and keeping up to date on the latest threats is "required reading". Not only do you need to keep up to date on security information you must pay a tax. Some call this a "maintenance fee" but in reality it is no different than a tax to maintain your status. You must earn credits in three year blocks or take your exam again for certification. You can earn these credits in different ways. One way is by attending seminars. You can receive credits by giving security classes of your own. You can do volunteer work for the ISC and get credits.

Overall, the certfication process for the CISSP is straightforward and requires simple but direct application of your abilities. If you have a desire to help protect people from losing their valued information and privacy this should be a typical job for you.
