How To Get A Certification As An Umpire

Submitted by: TigerEye

If you love baseball, you will love the job of being an umpire. Being involved in the game is big plus and an important part of the game. Read this short article on becoming certified as an umpire and let the games begin !

Being a professional umpire takes good eyesight. You will need to get an eye exam first before you will be allowed to be an umpire. Get an appointment with an optometrist or get your own downloadable eye chart online ( the link is below ). After making sure you have at least twenty twenty vision, proceed to the next step.

Now the easy part; learn all about baseball. If you learn about plays, the names of plays, how to get into position to call a play and more, you will be preparing to govern real baseball. Your decision making abilities should be fault-free. You should be a fair person and not prone to taking bribes. If you get to the major leagues, you will be tempted to take lots of money to create a bad decision in a baseball game. If you are a person who can not resist the temptation of big money perhaps you will want to choose another line of work. It is that or risk jail time, and you want to avoid that at all costs.

You have some schools that will help you to learn the ropes of umpiring. The Jim Evans Academy of Umpiring is a place to get the training you need. They give a course at the Academy of Professional Umpiring. It lasts for five weeks and costs $2950 dollars. You will be using the same field that the Houston Astros use for your lessons. You will have daily lessons that focus on communication, rules application, proper mechanics and of course, signals. You will do them over and over until you are sure you can do them without help. Most of the classes are begun at eight in the morning, but you may have a class or two in the evening. You are given videos to study your progress at the included video revew room.

Another school to consider is the Harry Wendlestedt School for Umpires. They advertise themselves as the "World´s most successful" umpire school. They are also located in Florida. You are encouraged to physically get ready to umpire with stretching and conditioning programs. You will learn ball and strike, safe and out calls, correct positions on the field, controlling your voice and stance. You will also learn how to handle players and the combinations of circumstances on the playing field. All the bases are covered, so to speak. Classes terminate at 3:30 PM and school games are umpired for more experience after you have ten days of experience. The games usually last until six in the evening.

You will be ready to take your exams at the end of classes for either of these schools. You will be a certified umpire that the Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation will recognize. You will most likely have a chance to ump in the minor leagues and perhaps in the majors also.
