How To Get A Certification As A Security Guard

You are required by many states and districts to have a license or certification before you are allowed to work as a security guard. Read on to find out a bit about getting this certification.

If you are in the United States, the state you are in will determine what the rules are for your certification. For instance, Alabama will require you to be at least eighteen years old. You must also have a valid driver´s license. If you are going to be an armed guard you must have a pistol license for the state of Alabama. For the state of Florida you must be at least eighteen to be a unarmed security guard and at least twenty one years of age for those who are armed. You must pass your exam and have a valid driver´s license. If you want to work in the state of New Hampshire it gets a bit more complicated. You must be at least eighteen years of age. You must complete documents that are compeleted in accordance with the Administrative Procedures Act. You must present in person to the permits and licensing unit. You must submit two sets of your fingerprints for the position of armed security guard.

You may or not need a high school education for your certification and job as a security guard. There are no college requirements for this position. You can get a criminal justice degree to help you during your duties, but again, this is no prerequisite to getting approved. Things you can practice on will be weapons retention, martial arts and the laws concerning the use of force in your district or state. Here are some things you will need to get familiar with :

  • Search and seizure
  • Report writing
  • Emergency situations
  • Applying handcuffs
  • Court appearances
  • Conflict management
  • Controlling access
  • Crime scene preservation

You will be expected to present a professional appearance at all times. You will be involved in protecting life and property. If you are armed you may be required to provide security for entry and for vehicles. You will be using necessary force in the commencment of your job. You may also be required to do searches for the sake of security.

One thing that is a prerequisite is your criminal background. If you have previous offenses in drugs or violent offenses, you may be restricted from getting certified as a security guard. If you have time in jail this could also prevent you from being certified as a security guard. If you have been convicted of Driving Under the Influence ( DUI ) this may or may not influence you being approved.
