Working on cars is a great job. Tuning them, getting them in shape to be used properly on the road is an interesting and popular job. After getting a certification like this you will be set apart from all the "shade tree" mechanics out there. You will be a professional worker. You have ASE certifications for boats, for watercraft, for large machinery as well as for autos. Learn some facts about becoming an ASE Mechanic here on this page.

The National Institute For Automotive Service Excellence is the place to get a certificaion to become a great mechanic. They are commonly called ASE. If you have had some training on autos in vocational school, this task of getting approved and certified should be a breeze for you. You have a broad range of vehicles to choose from to work on. The ASE has a matching set of exams to take. They have forty different exams in the following categories:

  • Collision repair technicians
  • Collision damage estimators
  • Alternate fuels technicians
  • Parts specialists
  • Auto service consultants
  • Automobile
  • Medium and heavy truck
  • Truck equipment
  • School bus
  • Engine machinist

You can break this down further because a car has different systems. You can get more expertise in the brake system, the engine and transmission and the exhaust and cooling systems. You may even divide it up further and include the air conditioning and heating sytems. For marine certification you will have many of the same certifications for the engine and related components. Heavy equipment will of course be related also.

You will have 750 different location in the United States to take the exam and it is offered twice a year, around the months of May and November. These are the old style pencil and paper exams. It is given by the ACT. ACT is the same group that deals with entrance exams for college. There is also a computer based test given at two hundred sites. This lasts for five weeks and is also two times a year. These tests are not a breeze. You must study hard to pass. After having two years of verifiable work experience, and passing one of the ASE exams, you will be awarded the certification of "ASE Master Technician".

Those who pass their ASE certification test are always over-joyed to be able to start making that extra money. Once you can get that big paycheque doing something you like to do, your life will turn for the better. If you do not have enough money for the study guides for taking the ASE exams, you should get online and see if you can find someone who has already passed and no longer needs their books. A used guide is sometimes better than a new one, because it has some extra tips from the last owner. This is a cheap and efficient way to realize the goal of being a professional certified mechanic.
