How To Become Certified As A NRA Instructor

Submitted by: TigerEye

In the sometimes dangerous world we live in, being prepared is not an option. If this has been your passion then you should also help others to be prepared. Take a look at this article on becoming certified as a NRA instructor and see if it is something you would like to do.

The first things you will need are based on common sense. A first prerequisite is a desire to help people. You may not get paid for your abilities at first. It will be similar to being an apprentice electrician, your pay will be your lessons. You will need to know how to think fast under stress, which requires maturity. You will of course need the desire to instruct people in the proper use and safety of firearms.

Practice, practice, practice. If you are a terrible shot, do not worry. You can improve. Make sure to choose a firearm that agrees with you. If you want, start with air pistols and rifles. They are cheaper and give you valuable time in practicing. For more realistic practice, get involved with paintball groups. The equipment is similar.

For the paperwork part, you can study under the National Rifle Association ( NRA ). They have a myriad of specific courses to help with whatever you want to learn. They require some credentials before you are given a certification with them. Some are :

  • Completing a NRA instructor course in the proper category
  • Demonstrating competence and skill in handling firearms
  • Demonstrating a background in firearms safety and shooting skills
  • Familiarity with action types for the firearms they are qualifying for

Some of the different categories of instruction are going to be :

  • Basic shotgun shooting course
  • Basic rifle shooting course
  • Home firearm safety course
  • Basic pistol shooting course

Those are prerequisites to the instructor courses. The instructor courses cover :

  • Personal protection at home
  • Rifle shooting
  • Instructor shotgun shooting
  • Personal protection outside the home
  • Shotgun shell reloading reloading course
  • Metallic cartridge reloading course
  • Instructor muzzleloading pistol shooting course
  • Instructor muzzleloading rifle shooting course
  • Instructor muzzleloading shotgun shooting course
  • Instructor pistol shooting
  • Instructor rifle shooting
  • Home firearm safety instructor
  • Chief range safety officer
  • "Refuse to be a victim" ® instructor development workshop

Basic lessons are given for the first levels of instructor courses. The NRA uses the "NRA Trainers´s Guide" for public protocol, speaking before an audience, training methods ( procedure ), training aids, training teams, building and staying within budget and preparing to teach.

You will be required to adhere to the principles of the National Rifle Association. You will be upholding the integrity and quality standards of the NRA. You will be expected to promote firearm safety and the sport of shooting. You will be expected to report training data to the NRA.

If you can do all the above, you are well on the way to being certified as an instructor in the National Rifle Association.
