How To Become Certified As A Lifeguard

If you enjoy being on the cutting edge of excitement and helping others stay out of danger, you may like being a lifeguard. Become a lifeguard and help others who are in realy danger. Read here for a bit of information on how to initiate a lifestyle as a lifeguard.

Where do you go to get certified as a lifeguard ? There is more than one answer to that, but one of the more popular places is the Red Cross. But if you are under the age of sixteen or so, you may be not be allowed to become a lifeguard yet. Hold on a few more years if you are still underage. If you are not a good swimmer, you must train and become one. Not being a strong swimmer is a basic requirement of being certified as a lifeguard.

If you are not underage and want to become a lifeguard, the Red Cross or the YMCA are places to start. Get a certification or take a course in First Aid. During your job as a lifeguard, you will be treating injuries and mending broken bones if you are a lifeguard for very long. You will need to know how to splint broken arms and maybe broken legs.

The next area to get some training in is CPR. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation is going to be a common thing for a lifeguard. You will be involved with people who have drowned or have water in their lungs. Learning how to get that water out and to save their life will be the thing you will feel best about in your job. Again, the Red Cross is the place to get your certification in CPR.

There are more things to learn about while you are undergoing your training for becoming a lifeguard. You will learn about surveillance. This is nothing more than monitoring the area that is under your care. This is a simple definition, but an important one. Surveillance is the key to preventing injuries. If you see threatening things happening under your care, you will need to deal with them before an accident happens. Your skills are the key to keeping the area under your control free from accidents. Keep a close watch, do not allow yourself to be distracted, and you will not have as many accidents happen.

The last thing to becoming a lifeguard is to take a water safety class. You probably already know by now that this is also given by the American Red Cross. After getting certified as a water instructor, you can also advance to becoming a head lifeguard. You can advance to other levels also, such as professional rescue. If you are diligent to train well and hard, you will reach your goal. Maintain a good attitude and your certifcation as a lifeguard will arrive in no time.
