You should have heard the news about the medical industry having a shortage of workers by now. The bad news is that the health of the nations are getting worse thanks to faulty thinking and motives. The good news for those looking for work in the medical industry is that they will have plenty to do. Here we will talk about how to become an ultrasound technician, also called a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer ( DMS ).
The ultrasound technician or diagnostic medical sonographer has obtained a special training to do their particular job. If you are going into this field, it will involve a good knowledge of math, physical sciences, English, life sciences and computer science. You will need to know a lot about medical terminology. You will be making sonographs of different areas of the body. Eyes, female organs, brains, the abdomen, spines, hearts, kidneys, livers, spleens and more will all be given a snapshot or video with ultrasound. This is accomplished without the dangerous effects of x-radiation. No negative side effects have yet to be discovered by the use of sonograph equipment on humans. There are sonograph techniques for animals also, but that is not the focus of this article.
To get started early, you will want to take the special classes in high school that are mentioned above. A general knowledge about how sound moves and works should be covered in the physical science category. If you star early you will have a chance at advancing to a vocational school or specialized school while you are in high school or shortly thereafter.
Any vocational schools should be accredited as well as any community college you attend. There are "institutes" of ultrasound available in California and other states, but again, you must check out their credentials before simply signing up for their classes.
Hospitals allow people with a limited amount of experience to begin work on simple jobs as a sonographer and advance to the level of ultrasond technician. If you can not afford school or do not have a schedule to adapt to colleges or vocational schools, this could be a valid choice for you to enter this career. Do not pay a penny to any so-called "school" until you have all the facts about them in hand.
Some colleges that specialize in the field of ultrasonography are :
Many, but not necessarily all of the above colleges listed are accredited. A related field currently offered by colleges is clinical biology. This is a class that is connected to ultrasound technology in a medical sense. One college that offers this class is Barry College in Miami Shores, Florida.
