If you are looking to expand your Information Technology skills, and can see the future of Linux, you should take a look into getting certified. The more experience you can handle, the more money you can make and Linux is still a growing field. Take a look at this article on how to become a Red Hat certified technician or "RHCT".

You should prepare for the exam for certification by taking some pre-assessment questionnaires that are available at redhat.com. If you feel confident that you can pass the exam without an assessment you can take the "RH202 RHCT Exam" outright.  This test is a hands-on test and is two hours long. It is started and finished in one day.  If you are in the European Union you will pay four hundred euros to take this test. If in Great Britain you will have to pay two hundred sixty pound.

There are a few prerequisites for those who wish to be a Red Hat Certified Technician. You will need to have some valid experience as an Administrator in Linux. This may be as simple as running your own server and learning how to optimize it and protect it. If you can:

  • Configure and add hardware to a Red Hat system
  • Do AIX installation and maintenance
  • Configure email
  • Configure the X Window System and a desktop environment
  • Use passwd to set passwords
  • Use text and graphical browsers to access internet URLs
  • Use standard command line tools
  • Provide storage management
  • Monitor resource usage
  • Backup the system or use tools such as NetBackup
  • Handle and understand IP routing
  • Can write shell scripts
  • Can use remote access tools

you have some of the required skills to be an Administrator in Linux. Having a background in Solaris, the operating system from the people who created the Java programming language, you will have a grasp of what it takes to be a Red Hat Linux Administrator. You are recommended to take other certifications first before you take the RH202 RHCT Exam. The "Red Hat Linux Essentials" ( RH033 ) and "System Administration" ( RH131 ) are considered prerequisites but not absolutely necessary.

If you are curious about the format of the RH202 exam, you will be taking the test on a live machine running Linux to be certified. Linux calls this "performance based" testing. Paper and pencils will not be required. You will need to get at least seventy percent correct on the test to pass.

As to the specific contents of the test, it is fairly secret. You will be required to sign an "NDA" or "Non Disclosure Agreement". The basic way the test goes is that you wil be required to correct the problems of a broken machine running Linux. If you can also build a working Linux machine from the ground up, including installation, you will have a better chance of passing the RH202 exam.
