How To Become A Firefighter

This job is one of the most important in society. The men and women who volunteer for this job should be commended. Here we will talk about what it takes to become a firefighter and become a true hero.
If you want to become a real fireman, you need to start early in life. You will probably not be allowed to start if you are younger than eighteen. If you are in New York you also must be under the age of twenty nine. You can retire as a fireman from your local district in twenty years or just a little less. If you get started while you are twenty, that means by the time you are forty, you can retire, if everything goes well. A career as a firefighter is solid adventure. The first thing to do is to contact your local fire station. Some of the things you will need to have before are :
- high school diploma
- your states driver´s license ( United States readers )
- be a citizen ( United States readers )
- clean criminal record
- physical exam
- psychological tests
- agility test
Some fire stations conduct their own training. If your area is this way then you will be joining the group and learning hands on. But if this is not the case, there are classes offered. Some states run their own fire academy. The "fire science degree" is considered by some to be a very helpful prerequisite to becoming a firefighter.
The Civil Service Exam is going to be required for most people who want to become a fireman. This is a test that is approximately three hours in length. Depending on the state you want to work in there may or may not be a study guide for the exam. The minimum score will be 70%. If you have prior military experience ( firefighter or not ) you may get this experience added to your score on the exam. There are books available online that will help you to pass the Civil Service Exam. One is; "Master the Civil Service Exams" by Peterson´s Books.
Your job will be similar to an EMT or Emergency Medical Technician. You will need medical training. If you have it already that will be a plus for you getting certified as a fireman. Studying building codes in your part of the world will also help you to be approved.
Some people become a fireman because they do not want to work that hard. They are simply lazy. Some people become a fireman for more noble reasons. They want to help people. Some people become a fireman because their friends are firemen. Whatever reason you have for embarking on this voyage of becoming a firefighter you will need to remember it is a dangerous job. You will be laying your life on the line for strangers. It is rewarding if you enjoy being a positive influence in the life of others.
