If you like animals and you like to help keem them healthy, the job of Certified veterinary practice manager should be something you would enjoy. Take a look at the steps to getting this job and help poor, sometimes abused animals.
If you are still in high school, take biology classes. Learning more about how animals were created is a great step forward in your respect for them. Thankfully, you will probably only be dissecting things as large as a frog, so do not worry about getting queasy to your stomach. Get good grades and target your future in management while you are learning more about animals.
The Certified Veterinary Practice Manager is shortened to an acronym of "CVPM", so be aware of that as you do your learning online and off. After high school, you will need to take courses in accounting, management, marketing, economics, finance, taxation ( especially if you live in the United States ) computer science and labor relations ( some call this human resources ). You will be the hub of attention in the veterinarian´s office so you will be somewhat of a jack-of-all trades. You will need eighteen hours of credits in two of the previously listed areas before you can get accepted for an application of a CVPM.
In addition to the previous studies, you will need forty eight hours of management related continuing education courses. You can do this with seminars or online with webinars. You must remember that these people you study under need to be accredited with recognizable institutions. Believe it or not "roundtable discussions" can be used as credits. A two hour "roundtable discussion" can count for one hour towards a credit.
The Veterinary Hospital Managers Association or VHMA is the establishment that will be taking care of your certification. You will need proof of completion of twenty six of the thirty functions needed by the VHMA before you will be allowed to take a test for certification.
You will need four letters of recommendation for the Veterinary Hospital Managers Association. They can not be family members. They must be familiar and acquainted with your character, abilities and work ethics. Choose those who are upstanding citizens.
The next step is to complete an application for the exam. You probably have already worked in the office of a veterinarian by this stage, and your achievements during your job will come in handy. The exam has four sections to it. For your convenience, the VHMA has provided a study guide and recommended reading list at their site. They also form study groups every once in a while. You will be charged $425 dollars to take the exam if you are member of VHMA and $575 if you are not. The exam is 200 true or false and multiple choice questions. It will be three and a half hours long.
Once you pass, you will be certified as a Veterinary Practice Manager.
