How To Become A Certified Tax Preparer

Submitted by: TigerEye

This is the time when people are thinking about their taxes. It may be too late this year to become certified as a tax preparer, but you may be able to do it in 2011. Look at this quick article on becoming a tax preparer if this is something you have been thinking about doing.

The IRS is well-equipped to enforce their tax laws on the population. This makes it easy to realize that your job-security will be well taken care of now and in the foreseeable future as a certified tax preparer. The first step in becoming one is to get some education. Some of the prerequisites for this job are a high school graduate, be at least eighteen years of age, and be familiar with tax laws. You are not going to be able to know all of them, but being familiar with the basics are indispensable.

Next, visit your local community college or vocational school. Let them know you are interested in classes on becoming a tax preparer. You will need to have some hours of class under your belt to be able to take an exam for licensing. Your state will be the overlying authority in how many hours of study you will need, as well as what is considered a passing grade. The community college or vocational school should be able to give you an accreditation. This will make sure you are dealing with a school that is valid and recognized by other establishments.

If you can not afford a community college, or your regular job does not allow you to attend classes, you can take classes online.

This is done on your schedule and on your budget. From free to high-priced, you will find many different levels of value. You will want to look into the "Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program" to learn more from the IRS. After learning from the source of the taxes, you will be better prepared to do this for a profit. The IRS also has their own tax law training courses online. Basic and intermediate levels of training and certification are a prerequisite to helping customers who need assistance filling out their tax forms. If you would like to look deeper into the courses offered by the IRS, you may visit irs.gov for more information. The levels of instruction offered by the IRS are:

  • Basic
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced
  • Military
  • International
  • Foreign Students and Scholars
  • Residents of Puerto Rico.

Be sure to look up "Link and Learn Taxes" while you are on the IRS site. These courses have their own certifications. You may also be interested in the Electronic Tax Software Practice Lab. This is found through the "Link and Learn Taxes". This program is interactive and involves self-study and classroom instruction. Get involved with the tax authority if you do not have a local way of learning how to be certified tax preparer.
