How to Become a Certified Professional Engineer

Submitted by: TigerEye

Engineers are relegated to positions of authority in accordance with their responsiblities. They certify public projects and have plenty of schooling to back up their signature or seal. If you want this job as an engineer, you should look at this article on how to become a certified professional engineer.

The first step to becoming anything, including an engineer is to finish high school. Be sure to take classes that include upper levels of math and science. After high school, search for a school of engineering that is ABET certified. ABET stands for "Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology". They are the reconized authority in the United States for colleges and universities and their programs. The state you are living in will more than likely require you to have a degree from an ABET accredited learning establishment. You will not be able to take the Professional Engineering ( PE ) exam without graduating from an ABET accredited school in 95% of the states in the United States.

There are other exams to take before the PE exam. After attending a few years of college, take the Fundamentals of Engineering ( FE ) exam. In many states you can take this test in October or in April. This exam was called the Engineer-in-Training exam ( EIT ) in times past. This is a closed-book test that is more easily taken while you are involved in classes at your university. This way the things you are learning are still fresh in your memory and more easily recalled for the exam. It is not a test of the total of your learning. It is pretty much a test of how much you have absorbed. The questions are two minutes a piece for the morning session and four minutes a piece for the afternoon session. Be encouraged that you will probably do well on this test if you choose to take it during your senior year at your university.

The next step is to get some on-the-job training. You will need to continue your hands-on training under a certified professional engineer. Be sure to get a job that is in your chosen field of expertise.

If computers, then computers, if architecture, then architecture, and so forth. This will allow you to make sure you pass your PE exam without confusion. This exam is usually going to have eighty questions divided up into two sessions; morning and afternoon. The exam will be eight hours long. You will need to bring along some reference books to help you. The exam is an open-book exam.

You will receive your license to practice as a professional engineer. You will be qualified to begin work and be a positive input to society.
