If you want to be in shape and to help others do the same you should become a certified personal trainer. This is a rewarding job keeping your health and the health of others at tip top shape. Read on to find out more about getting this certification.
You have a few choices to becoming a professional personal trainer. You can start in the gym under your own trainer. You can start in the military and then help others after you get out. You can also get online courses that will help you to achieve your goal and get the knowledge you need. The online courses are going to need some care if you plan on taking one. One that is recommended online is created by "ACE". This is the American Council on Exercise. Another group is the "ACSM". This is the American College of Sports Medicine. This organization is recommended with workshops and an exam available to those who wish to be certified. Pearson VUE will be the folks granting the exam and it is only available through computers. All the questions will be of the multiple choice variety. It is available in three languages.
The basic prerequisites to getting certified as a personal trainer are common. You will need a high school diploma. You will need to be certified in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation ( CPR ). You will need to be eighteen years of age or older. If you already meet these requirments, you are ready to study for your exam and become a personal trainer.
Some of the things you will want to study before you are ready to take your exam are :
Kinesiology is the study of the human body and the way it moves. Body movement will of course be an indispensable part of your job. Muscular balance and other mechanics of the human body will be a focus of your study. Anatomy is concerned with the simple physical location of the parts of of an animal, human or plant. In your case it will be a human. Learning the structure of the human body is probably just as important as knowing how it moves. Exercise physiology is concerned with the vital functions of exercise. In other words you will be learning the "results" of exercises so you can know the "why" of exercises. This is great to know and will give you an edge over regular trainers. They just train to lose weight or to get strong, but they do not know the details of what is going on with a particular exercise.
Whether you choose the ACSM or the ACE or the AFPA ( American Fitness Professionals and Associates ), or whatever path, you will need to be certified by an accredited institution. If you do not get certified by an accredited group, you are wasting time and money. Make sure to check out the credentials of the school or group you study with and stay safe.
