Submitted by: TigerEye

Those who work in a cafeteria as cooks or similar can get a certification as a Certified Nutrition Specialist. This can be a rewarding job and you get to sample the food too ! Take a look at this article on becoming a CNS if you think this is career is for you.

One of the first things you will need is money. You will not need this with every certifying "authority" but many will want to charge you three hundred dollars. In addition to this charge, just to apply for the exam is fifty dollars. The fifty dollars is not refundable but the fee for the exam can be refundable. This is at cbns.org. After successfully passing the exam, you will also have a "yearly maintenance fee". Your certification will last for five years.

You will be required to have a fairly high level of schooling as a prerequisite to becoming a Certified Nutrition Specialist. The Master´s Degree level is recommended. If you are a registered nurse, this is acceptable also. A person with a Doctor´s Degree is allowed to take the exam.

The things you will need to learn about are fairly simple, despite the schooling necessary to do the job. You will need to know how to analyze the diets of specific persons, plan programs to have a patient eat a certain diet and give consultations. The CNS certification exam that you will take to be approved will have two hundred multiple choice questions. You will have four hours to finish the exam. The test is divided up into sections:

  • Professional issues
  • General nutrition
  • Nutrients
  • Nutrient assessment
  • Clinical nutrition
  • Professional issues

You must get at least sixty five percent right to pass the test for a CNS.

One group you will want to check out is the CDR. This is the "Commission For Dietitic Registration". They have named themselves the authority in who is allowed to call themselves a nutritionist. You may want to check out their webisite at cdrnet.org. If you have not noticed already, many call themselves a "nutritionist". This can lead to confusion out in the public because not all have enough training to be in field of nutrition. The ability to officially call yourself this is given by he CDR.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics says that this career field will be increasing in numbers in the United States by a small margin. Most who are approved to become a Certified Nutritional Specialist will work in a hospital. People who go beyond their district´s or state´s certificaion requirements will make better money and be offered a job more quickly.

A certified nutritionist or technician makes a wage of around forty eight thousand dollars per year or a little better. That is not too bad and you get to sample the food too !
