Becoming a professional in the jewelry business is still a profitable undertaking. The cost of jewels is not changing even though the worth of the US dollar is. This is pretty much a recession proof job and you can advance if you have the correct training.
You must be gainfully employed as a registered jeweller before you are going to be allowed to obtain the higher level of gemologist. There is no set time as to how long you must be a jeweller before you can apply for the level of gemologist.
The first place to look is the American Gem Society. They have a background going back to 1934. Robert M. Shipley and a grouop of jewelers were the founders of this group. It was the creator of the school of gemology also called the "Gemological Institute of America". Their goal was to create high standards of morality and quality in the business of selling gems. Not many who apply for the certification of gemologist are approved.
It will help to study and then pass the exam for the "AGS Way" course. This course is created to provide the standards for ethics, consumer protection and knowledge for you the jeweller. You will learn how the AGS grades diamonds. The manual by itself is just one hundred twenty five dollars. There is an enrollment form online for your convenience. There are other courses as well that cover the titles of Registered Jeweler, Certified Gemologist and Registered Supplier. One will apply to you wherever you are in the jewelry business.
Part of the exam that is provided by the American Gem Society are two diamonds. These are provided for you to grade. If you grade them correctly, you will be more likely to pass and be rewarded your certification as a certified gemologist.
If you are still young and want to start out on some classes before you are a registerd jeweler, try geology. High school classes concentrating on this and on science will give you a part of the training you need to become a jeweler and later a gemologist. If you are good in business you will be able to accurately appraise a diamond or other jewel and do so honestly even before you are working as on the job.
Becoming a gemologist is attaining a satisfying level in your career. It is similar to other businesses in that you have reached an elveated plateau in life.
