Machines are taking over many aspects of business life. Nevertheless, forklift drivers are still needed in many places. Read on to find out how you can get certified as a forklift driver and help to organize storehouses and factories.
You will be handling a variety of tasks as a forklift driver. You may be required to work standing up or sitting down. As of yet, there are no forklifts that operate while a person is laying down, but who knows, the future may change that. You will be required at times to inventory products. You may also be required to weigh material and products. You will most definitly be required to maintain the forklift in a safe and efficient manner.
There is a Union that handle applications for certifications for forklift drivers. Their name is the "International Union of Operating Engineers". If you qualify, you may be able to have them pay for your classes.
If you live in the United States, OSHA ( Occupational Safety and Health Administration ) will be able to provide you with all the necessary information to become certified and to become a trainer of forklift drivers if that is a goal of yours. If you choose to be a trainer for your company or wharehouse, you do not need more certifications. You simply become the designated person with enough experience necessary to remedy dangerous situations and evaluate other forklift operator´s in the company. If you can do this job and have enough maturity, you can teach other´s also.
There are downloadable courses online that you can study in your own spare time that will help you to realize your goal of being certified as a forklift operator. You can get the following training :
- Industrial Fork Lift Truck Training
- Federal OSHA Standard 29 CFR1910.178
- Powered Industrial Truck Training
The courses will cost around one hundred and twenty five dollars.
Why is it important to be certified with OSHA as a forklift operator ? The answer is simply because many states are joined with the government in their rulings. Many states like Washington requre credentials with OSHA because they choose to be joined with the Federal Standards.
Many industries these days are focused on safety because of the litigous society that has become commonplace in the United States and other areas of the Western world. You will no doubt be encouraged to undergo stringent safety classes, especially if you plan on operating a forklift that weighs sixty tons or more. You will be required to know and show experience in vehicle capacity, refueling and charging batteries, steering and maneuvering, control and instrumentation, forks and attachments, visibility, vehicle stability, engine and motor operation and load composition and stablity. There is much more than that list, but this is a start.
