Teeth are a twice in a life time event. The second event is forever for the human body. This means that those who work on teeth have a fairly stable job future. Read more about getting certified as a dental assistant and start making money in this career field.

One of the first steps in becoming a dental assistant is to get started while you are in high school. Take courses that give you information about chemsitry, biology, health and business. You will be able to understand better about the world of teeth with these courses under your belt. If you can take advantage of anatomy or computer classes, that would help also.

If your high school or your town has a vocational school that offers initial classes to becoming a dental assistant or hygienist, this would be a great place to become serious about learning how to operate in a dental office. If one of these type schools is not available, try a dental program offered specifically for assistants. You will want to get involved with a program that is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation or CODA. They have nearly three hundred places in the United States and some in Canada that are accredited programs. If you are in Canada, the name changes to "Commission on Dental Accreditation" or CDAC. The CODA is an extension of the American Dental Association.

The slow way of becoming a dental assistant is to start working in a dental office without experience. If you find a dentist that will allow you to do this, it will give you what you need to get certified later. Otherwise, more schooling will be required.

If none of the above scenarios works for you, or you just do not have time to complete them on someone else´s schedule, you have options.

There are some schools that will allow you to take classes online over the internet. Penn Foster schools is a school that has online classs for the dental assistant certification. There are others like them such as Stratford Career Institute. Whichever you choose you must make sure that the school offers courses that are accredited. Getting into a situation where you lose your time and money to a school that does not have sufficient accreditation is not something you want to do with your life. Getting courses sent to you in the mail is another option for an alternative to online courses.

Some of the things you will be learning for your certification are as follows :

  • dental terminology
  • getting a patient ready for exam
  • managing dental records
  • preparation of anesthetics
  • managing the dental equipment
  • taking x-rays

There are other things to add to the list, but are considered administrative tasks. You may need to confirm appointments, work with the bills and payments, call patients for reminders and more. You will probably be ordering dental supplies also. Your job will be a well rounded one and one that helps every area of the dental office to run well.
