If you are young, you will need to finish high school. Taking science classes and especially biology classes will give you part of the foundation of how the human body works. You will probably need to be above seventeen years of age to begin getting certified in regular CPR. You can get a jump on this by becoming a lifeguard at a local pool or beach. A lifeguard receieves similar instruction to an EMT. The Red Cross or the YMCA can give you basic CPR instruction.
After being certified in CPR, you can begin the schooling to advance to the level of instructor. You have more than one group that is recognized as an accredited place to certify persons as an instructor. They are the American Red Cross, The American Safety and Health Institute and the American Heart Association. All three have different rules and guidelines for becoming certified. Therefore you will be required to do differing things for each organization.
To teach CPR classes for the American Red Cross, you must be at least seventeen years of age by the last scheduled session of the instructor course. You must have passed each level of the written pre-examination given before the actual course begins. A score of eighty percent is considered passing. You must have a "FIT" certificate that is less than twelve months old. FIT stands for "Fundamentals of Instructor Training". If you do not have the FIT requirement, you may substitute it with a
Health and Safety Services Instructor Auhorization.
