The first step to becoming a successful bookkeeper is to take math classes. It is preferable that you take the advanced math classes in high school. If your high school offers a class in economics, that would also be a plus. When you graduate from high school you will want to take a vocational course, if they offer accounting courses. If not, you will want to look for a college if you can afford one that offers classes in accounting. If you can not do that, look online for accounting classes that you can take in your spare time. If you can get started working for an accounting firm, just to get acquainted with how it is run, this will also help you.

One place to get certified as a bookkeeper is the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. Right now they are offering a free twenty three page booklet in the military version and the regular version from their web site. They will also mail it to you. Some of the requirements for gettig certified are; at least two years of full time working experience. You can have this before or after passing your exam. You will be required to sign a code of ethics. You will need to take the exam, which is conducted in four parts. It is a national examination and given at Prometric Test Centers. There are over three hundred of these test centers in the country ( United States ) and one will probably close to you.

  • Error correction, with bank reconciliation

  • Payroll
  • Depreciation
  • Inventory
  • Internal controls

A passing score is considered to be seventy five percent, but for open book parts a passing score is seventy percent. If you fail you are allowed to retest later. The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers has materials available that will help you to prepare for the exam.
