How To Become A Certified Arborist

Submitted by: TigerEye

Trees are dying and need you to help. It is not about global warming, it is about diseases that are attacking our trees. Learn how to make a real impact on our environment by becoming a certified arborist.

Arboriculturist is the professional job title of the more traditional "arborist". You will be studying and maintaining the health and structure of trees and shrubs. This is not the same as being a landscaper, but if you are one, this type of experience will definitely help you to become an arborist.

If you live in the United States there is an organization that can help you right off the bat. They are the Tree Care Industry Association. They were known in the past as the National Arborist Association, also called the NAA. On their site they have tons of information to help you. They were established in 1938 and are firmly established as the accreditation and certification leaders for arborists. They also maintain a list of those colleges that have programs for arborists. Here is a short list :

  • Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ
  • Allegany College of Maryland, Cumberland, MD
  • Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
  • Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI
  • Blue Ridge Community College, Weyer's Cave, VA
  • Clemson University, Clemson, SC
  • Northeast Iowa Community College, Calmar, IA
  • University of Maine, Orono, ME
  • Auburn University, Auburn University, AL
  • Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL
  • University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN
  • University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, WI
  • University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA

Once you are certified as an arborist, you will also want to be certified with a CTSP credential from the same people. This stands for "Certified Treecare Safety Professional". This will show your professionalism and help you to make more money. This requires an exam just like the arborist position. To apply for this extra exam you must have three year of arborist experience.

If you happen to live in the "land down under", Australia, you also have an organization called the National Arborists Association of Australia. You can find them at naaa.net.au. They are not as established as the previous organization.

You will want to locate some study guides on the following topics :

  • Soil structure
  • Tree safety
  • Tree biology and care
  • Tree maintenance
  • Tree climbing

You are recommended to study up on your tree identification. There is one more organization that is international that you may be interested in for certification. The ISA ( International Society Of Arborists ) has a popular program. In fact, they have more than one program if you are interested in other certifications. Though they are giving out international certifications, they also located in Champaign, Illinois. They have CD´s and other information for sale on their site at isa-arbor.com.

After you pass the Certified Arborist examination, your certificate will be valid for three years. You must continue your education to remain a certified arborist.
