How to Become a Certified Accountant

Submitted by: paula

Being Certified as a Management  Accountant In the finance and accounting department or fields, being a ceritifed accountant specifically a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is indeed a very good qualification. One can practice accountancy even without a certification but the advantage of being certified is that it acts as a passport that legitimizes one's abilities in the accounting field. For those who are already CPAs  or Certified Public Accountants, it is also a helpful designation to have a CMA title, as it gives the person an impression of having a deeper and more well rounded understanding of management and accountancy in one.

Requirements for CMA Certification

There are of course an educational requirement before an accountant can sit for and take a licensure examination to become a CMA, or before he applies for a CMA certification.  The IMA, the Institute of Management Accountants, gives an applicant three options to meet the requirements for CMA certification. One is if he has a Bachelor's degree in any subject from a United States institution that is regionally accredited. Another is that if he has a degree coming from a school outside the United States that is acceptable within the standards laid down by the IMA itself. However, in some instances that the applicant does not have any Bachelor's degree, there are two other options that he may take.  He can either  take the GMAT exam or the GRE

exam and pass within the top 50th percentile, or he can show a proof of certification that is equivocal to the strength of that of the CMA, or CPA or a Certified Financial Manager, the so called CFM. Not only that, but also, there is a minimum number of years of experience, two years of consecutive experience in management, accounting and/ or finance, before he can take the CMA certification exams. After accounting that all requirements are available and have been furnished, the examination has to be passed, and automatically, he can be called a licensed and certified management accountant.

Membership and Testing

To be able to gain and keep a license coming for the IMA, a membership in the IMA is necessary. The membership is also needed prior to the exam application. There is an annual membership fee that should be settled to the IMA afterwhich the sending of the required information for the exams will follow. The educational documents such as the transcript of records, employment and work experience certification, other academic certifications should be sent as well accompanied by the furnished information form coming from the IMA.
