Job Overview Office work involves many activities which are distributed to office personnel. Office administrators supervise, coordinate and direct office personnel with tasks and department activities. The amount of work in offices would require the company to hire office clerks and workers which will be monitored by office administrator. Before, their task was to ensure that the clerks are productive. Office administrators check what the office personnel perform, including the tasks given, and report them to the management. Today, they are more involved in company operations, since they coordinate activities of different department , inform the management of the department performance and ensure the efficient and smooth operations of the business.

Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required

It is required to have a high school diploma when pursuing a career as office administrator. Most employers prefer to hire a college graduate with a degree in Business Administrator or Business Management. Classes that will be helpful in this career would include English, Communications, Speech, Sociology, History, Mathematics and other business-related class. Computer class will be helpful to know computer software programs that is involved in daily business operations.

Skills and Abilities

The most important skill of an office administrator is interacting with people. They need to know how to properly communicate with people in the workplace from their superiors to the clerks. They need to know how to motivate office personnels to perform excellently. They need to be detail oriented, patient, dependable and trustworthy. It is essential to know how to drive the staff in meeting deadlines. Office administrator should know how to stay focused on work since they will encounter stress and tension. They need good decision-making skills to be able to meet demands of the superiors,

The main duty of office administrator is to make sure that the operations run properly. It is their duty to be involved in monitoring and organizing different activities.

They need to check the performance of each office clerk or personnel. They are also involved in interviewing job applicants and providing recommendations for hiring purposes. It is included in their responsibility to train new workers. They are responsible in explaining office policies and performance criteria. Knowing the weaknesses and strengths of each employee is important, so that they can decide who is best to choose to perform a certain task. Office administrators should know how to perform the different tasks and activities that office clerks and personnel do.

Studies that were conducted showed that average salary of office administrator is $42,400. Their salary will depend on their work experience and skills which can be enhanced through their education. Those who are skilled in using data processing and computer are given better employment opportunities as an office administrator.
