Job Overview During the middle and high school or the secondary school years, mathematics is the subject that is present every year along with the different sciences and language subjects. The instruction in different mathematics subjects is being rendered by the mathematics teachers. They provide instructions to various subjects in math such as the algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus and calculus.

Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required

If you wish to establish a career in teaching mathematics tho middle and high school students, prepare as early as high school by taking as many subjects in math, applied science, physical science, psychology and computer. These are good preparatory subjects that will ease your post secondary training adjustment. In college, preferred courses include B.S. Mathematics or B.S. Education majoring in Mathematics. Licensure examination in teaching should be taken prior to one's practice as a mathematics teacher.

Skills and Abilities

Mathematics teachers should have a genuine interest in helping young people learn the science of math. Patience is necessary. Interpersonal skills are useful in dealing with the students, the parents and the co-teachers with regards to the academic matters. Communication skills both on oral and in written form are a requirement as well. A good teaching and helping skills are prerequisite in becoming an effective academician.

Duties

Mathematics teachers generally work with the middle and the high school level students, to teach them different subject areas in math. They provide lectures, discussion as well as render evaluative activities in a form or interactive activities, projects, homework, essays and written exams. As such, they develop learning strategies, teaching strategies, and outline of topics and activities to be taught and implemented, as well as develop evaluation plans and activities to gauge the degree of learning of the students. They also collaborate with the other teachers of the different subjects with regards to the performance of each of the students and deliberate with them. During off class hours, they are also free for the students for additional consultation and counseling.

The job outlook for this career is said to move as fast as the average for the other professions, mainly in the areas of teaching. The salary is dependent on the factors such as the following: the location, size of school, level of education and number of years of professional experience. The salary ranges from 30,000 U.S. dollars to 45,000 U.S. dollars per annum. Others with the supervisory position earn around 73,000 U.S. dollars and over.
