Legal Investigators: Job Description, Education, Skills, Duties and Earnings

JOB OVERVIEW Legal investigators are staff of law firms or companies that specialize in cases with court or legal involvement. They are normally employed by any law firms yet at times, they are privately practicing as investigators for  private clients like lawyers, celebrities and businessmen. Many think that a legal investigator is an undercover spy. Their job is to provide assistance in preparing criminal defenses for clients by locating sources and witnesses. They also help in securing legal documents, and completing gaps in events by way of interviewing policemen and prospective witnesses, as well as  simply gathering objective evidence for reviews. Legal investigators, on the other hand,  also may collect information on the parties to the litigation. At times they are tasked to take photographs, assert and testify in court more than organizing and assembling evidences and legal reports for court trials.

EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Problem solving skills and observation using the faculty of our senses are innate to human beings. There are no formal educational requirements for most legal investigator jobs actually. Although by far, many legal investigators have finished college degrees, it is an added credential to an applicant. Almost all legal investigators have previous experiences in other related but not similar types of works or occupations. Some have work experiences in insurance companies, and many others in the collections companies as well as in  several private security firms. The common activity in all these three examples are knowing how to weigh and consider based on investigation, if an approval or a disapproval is to be given. Many legal investigators before settling to  that industry, enter the field after serving in law enforcement and or the military,  as well as in the government auditing and other investigative positions such as that of the position in the Federal intelligence. Majority of the States in the U.S. require legal investigators to be licensed. Licensing procedure and completion of the requirements vary from one state to another. Of course, a person who has been previously convicted will not be eligible to apply for a license. A growing number of states are requiring aspiring legal investigaros to undergo a mandatory training program to enhance skills and abilities further.

ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Very important in becoming a legal investigator is the ability to observe, comunicate and think critically.  A person's goal is to find solutions and bridge gaps to the events beign presented in the court cases. Because of this, he has to be persistent, and very hardworking. The skills in data gathering by different means such as taking photgraphs, interviewing, undercover operating et. al. should be developed.

The work is also demanding in a sense that the hours of duty varies as needed, mostly depending on the expected timing of the  occurence of events,  as well the the people's schedules where collaboration has to be done.

DUTIES

Legal investigators may take several roles. He may be a plain investigator, or act as a witness. He may take the  role of an assistant as well as a researcher for previous crime scenes. He  makes sure that  information necesssary for the case is available by any other means so as to determine the resolving facts to be used by the laywer and the parties and presented in the court. To cite an example, in other cases, especially in cases  where there is an involvement of missing key people, background checks are conducted as well as interviewing significant others and finding then interviewing possible key persons. In almost all cases, legal investigators provide assistance to attorneys primarily but not limited to, with a range of concerns including that of the legal, financial, criminal and personal problems.

EARNINGS AND JOB OUTLOOK

In U.S., the national average wage for a legal investigator is approximately $50,614. This may vary depending on the location or the state's rate in general, the employer, the level of expertise and years of tenure or experience , and lastly, the projects' extra earnings through comissions for a job well done.
