Job Overview Just this late 19th century, the lather's craft was established. However, even in the olden times, there had been evidences of the idea that the use of support materials on walls and roofs do provide not only a foundation but also a retention of warmth to the structure. Presently, lath is being used to serve this purpose. A lath is a supporting base made out of plastic, or gypsum which is secured to roofs, ceilings and walls. It provides a foundation for the application of the next layers of materials such as the plasters, tiles, fireproofing materials and several acoustical materials. Those who work with the installation and the maintenance of the lath are called lathers.

The work of a lather is a type of a skilled work. If you wish to build a career in becoming a lather, take subjects in Mathematics, Livelihood education and Shop classes as early as high school. These classes will provide a very good foundation that will be used for the work in lathering. The most common and the most popular way to become a professional lather is through an apprenticeship program being provided by different technical schools in different states.

The skills that are necessary to fulfill the duties involved in the job are skills in following instructions and the mechanical and manipulative skills in the installation of the lath. A good computational skills will help in the measuring of the materials to be applied on the framework. It is a must that they know how to do blueprint reading for the correct installation of the lath considering the holes and spaces that must be left out for electrical outlet and air ducts.
Duties
Lathers assess the kind of lath to be used in the surface of the ceiling, walls or roofs. There are different materials that can be used as laths. These are the metal laths, foil laths, hard plastic laths and gypsum laths. Metal laths are commonly used on kitchens, bathrooms wherein tiles are being installed after.
Gypsum laths, on the other hand, are commonly use din ceilings and roofs are protection from moisture and cold. After identifying the type of lath to be used, the next step that they follow is to measure the size of the lath to be installed in the framework. They will then secure it to the furring using wires, staples and screws. Afterwards, they will cut the openings for air ducts and for the electrical outlets and reassess the finished foundation.
Earnings and Job Outlook
The job outlook for this kind of profession is expected to move more slowly than the average for the other types of careers. Opportunities are better in the urban areas than in the rural ones. This is because lathering in the rural areas can be performed by painters and carpenters themselves. The salary range of a lather starts off from 21,530 U.S. dollars to 34,000 U.S. dollars per year. Those who are not employed by any interior design and construction firms, or lathering and plastering constructors may take as many clients as they can to earn more than what the employment can give. In this case, there are lathers who earn around and over 58,000 U.S. dollars on a yearly basis.
