Job Overview Land acquisition professionals are the ones we see assisting and supporting the efforts of the non profit land trusts to preserve land as well as water from the activities such as developing of subdivisions, using land heavily for recreational use and agricultural use. Included in these activities are the other human disruptions through handling the land transaction such as buying the land outright, acquiring an instant development rights, easy obtaining of easements and getting different landowners to donate the land and other related and synonymous actions.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you wish to establish a career as a land acquisition professional, prepare as early as high school by taking subjects in English, Communications, Mathematics and Business. These will serve as a good foundation in the coming post secondary training and in the upcoming job as a land acquisition professional. There are no specific post secondary course required to get in this job. However, courses such as Business, Economics, and Natural Sciences are preferred to be taken.
Skills and Abilities
The skills that are needed in becoming an effective land acquisition professional are skills in leadership and management as well as good communication skills. These skills are very useful in being able to organize and strategize for the different activities and efforts in land acquisition and be able to negotiate well with the different public and private sectors to enable the accomplishment of their goals.
Deal making skills and negotiating skills are also necessary in this job.
Duties
The tasks of a land aquisition professional depend on the size of the organization he is working for. He may be a separate professional who handles transaction solely about land, which can be seen most likely in well funded and large organizations. He may also be an executive director who handles many other transactinos and accomplish tasks, in which land transaction is just a part. The goal of any land aquisition professional is to be able to save some land or water for preservation either by buying it, having the owner donate it or having the government to acquire it. They talk and check with the private owners, the government about the assest, their interest on the land and as to whether they are willing to donate, sell or negotiate with the government about it. They process and facilitate all the stages of land aquisition which involves, buying the land outright, getting development rights, obtaining easements, and the like.
