Job Overview Information brokers are also called online researchers and at times called independent information professionals. As the title implies, they deal with online information compiling from the online services and databases. They work with clients from various professions. The tasks include researching marketing surveys, business and government statistics, newspaper articles, abstracts as well as other types of relevant references. They may also be tasked to prepare reports as well as presentation based on their researches. As this can be a flexible job, they can work from home, on a part time or on a full time basis for libraries, law firms corporations and in government agencies.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you wish to establish a career in this profession, prepare as early as high school by taking subjects in Computer Science, Journalism and English. These are very helpful in giving a strong foundation for the skills and knowledge which will be needed in the fulfillment of the duties involved in the future job. The minim requirement is a Bachelor's degree in any of the related post secondary courses. Preferred courses include Liberal Arts, Information Science and Technology.
Skills and Abilities
To be successful in this field, a never ending and strong interest in internet and honing of one's computer skills are a must. In addition, a mastery of search engines and different applications such as Dialog, Nexis/Lexis and other information database is required. Scientific and technical skills therefore is highly regarded in this job.

Information brokers may have a variety of duties depending on the field that they work in. Let's say for example, works fora certain law firm. The legal profession hires him to search for legal cases, update law library collections, find expert witnesses, research histories, locate cases and the like. Should they be hired by a marketing company, they duties may include researching for studies in the marketability of a certain enterprise including the demands of a certain product, the history of the type of business, the feasibility of increased profitability and so on so forth.
