Job Overview Indexers are people responsible in compiling organized lists called index or indices that help people locate certain information or texts or any kind of entry or body of work. Indexes or indices are similar to road maps. These help the users of the material find the information they desire just like how maps have helped tourists find their desired destinations. Also these should provide the users with the basis for selecting out what are relevant and irrelevant information while researching.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you wish to establish a career in this industry, prepare as early as high school by taking subjects in English, Computer, History and other social sciences. These are preparatory subjects that will give a better foundation for the upcoming duties in the job. There are no specific paths or courses to take to get in the job. However, the minimum requirement is a possession of a Bachelor's degree in any of the field of study. What is important is that they are well-read, and knowledgeable about a wide range of academic disciplines. This is why Liberal Arts courses are often recommended.
Skills and Abilities
Being an indexer is not easy. The work is solitary in nature. This means that the person should have the passion to read, proofread and organize data and headings in such a way that these will promote a coherent structure for the readers. Patience is necessary in this kind of tiring job. Also, since this deals with books, journals and other reference materials, he should love intellectual challenges. Being keen to details is a must in fulfilling the duties in this job.
Duties
Today there are two types of indexes.
The more primitive ones are found in non fiction books and encyclopedias. The more recent and modern ones are found in online books and texts. the early indexes are further classified into two: the single volume book back indexes and the multi-volume ones. The former are usually found in non fiction books such as the textbooks and the latter can be found in series of books, encyclopedia being the best example. This is where the work of the indexers revolve around. They organize the entries in the index and dictate the terms or the so-called headings. Together with the headings are the page number or the so-called locators. They also include cross references to other relevant headings so as to indicate the presence of graphs, chars as well as pictures and flowcharts. These can be done in online books or electronic books and references as well.
Earnings and Job Outlook
The income of an indexer starts off from 20,000 U.S dollars per annum to 30,000 U.S. dollars. Others who are in the supervisory position and have a considerable number of years of professional working experience may have a rate as high as 70,000 U.S. dollars per year. The job outlook for this kind of profession is said to move as fast as the average in general, for the other professions and field.
