Job Overview Hematologists are medical doctors who specialize in the treatment of the disorders of the blood.These include anemia, leukemia, sickle cell disease, bone marrow disorders, Hemophilia, to name a few. They must be skilled and knowledgeable to treat all of the type of these diseases to include not only the disease of the blood but also the disease of the bone marrow and the vascular system in general.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you are planning to establish a career in becoming a hematologist, prepare for an extensive educational line up. An undergraduate course should be taken initially to be able to get an adequate foundation in the medical course proper. Undergraduate courses preferred include human related sciences and medical related pre-medical courses. After finishing a four year degree as a preparatory course in medicine, an entrance examination to get in the medical school should be taken. After passing it, go on to the medical school and graduate. A licensure examination is necessary so as to be registered an obtain a license as a general practitioner. Specialization programs in Hematology from the many teaching hospitals should be obtained and passed to finally become a Hematologist.
Skills and Abilities
The skills that should be existent in every doctor are skills in total patient management. This include the skills in analytical thinking, manipulative skills in doing certain laboratory and diagnostic procedures, helping/teaching skills to educate the patients and the significant others, interpersonal and communication skills, and of course the expertise in the field of medicine more specifically in Hematology.Doctors should possess a genuine concern to help the patients who seek medical help from them. To aid them in understanding them, they should employ empathy in every contact that they have with their patients.
Duties
Just like any other physicians, hematologists work in treatment and examination rooms wherein they provide or do consultations with and diagnose their patients.
After the definitive diagnosis of the patient's condition, through the many test such as the blood examinations, karyotypings and bone marrow analysis, they will then start their treatment through a series of treatment plans or program individualized to a certain patient. They may do procedures such as bone marrow aspirations and blood transfusion or order them to be done. They constantly monitor the progress of the patient with the treatment that they give and provide them with good emotional and psychological support while doing so. Part of the job is to prepare home or discharge plans as well as do follow up check ups.
Job Outlook and Earnings
The job opportunities or employment outlook for hematologists is very good. It is expected to grow as fast as the average for the other professions in the other industry until the year of 2014. As for their salaries, hematologists receive around 235,000 U.S. dollars yearly on the average. The salary range starts off from 181,000 U.S. dollars to around 600,000 U.S. dollars. The earnings are dependent on the level of education, the years of professional experience, location of the employer and the state of practice, and lastly, the presence of an established name in the Hematologic Medicine.
