Job Overview The job of a grounds manager is more or less similar to that of the landscapers. A grounds manager may be involved in the planning, designing, and maintaining of the gardens and any kind of landscaped grounds in parks, residential areas, and private offices. Depending on the level of responsibility in the landscaping firm, they may direct the projects at private homes, malls, schools, parks, etc. They may also be responsible in looking for and purchasing different supplies to be used in training, directing and supervising the lower level employees. After the landscaping designs have been implemented, they are the ones who do or supervise the maintenance of the landscaped area or ground.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you with to become a grounds manager in the future, prepare as early as high school by taking subjects in arts, livelihood education as well as in natural science of chemistry, and biology. Generally, a high school diploma is necessary for most positions in the landscaping firm plus some college trainings from a two to four year program in a agronomy, horticulture and landscape management.
Skills and Abilities
Grounds managers should have "green thumbs" as they say. As their primary tools for beautifying the area are the plants of different kinds, they should have an excellent knowledge and skills in growing, nurturing and preserving them in natural areas. They should be highly interested in nature and arts too. Lastly, a good aptitude for working with the landscaping tools and machines are needed including a good manual dexterity while operating such.
Duties
The duties of a grounds manager vary widely. These are dependent on the supervisory level that they are in.
In general, their main duty is to maintain landscaped grounds of parks, playgrounds, schools, residential areas, offices, and the like. However, in some instances, they work hand in hand or they also perform the duties of a landscaper in general. They may plan, design and implement designs, aside from plainly maintaining the previously landscaped grounds. Other things that they may need to do are planting and pruning trees, repairing driveways and walks, as well as ensure that cleanliness and the orderliness of the area.
Earnings and Job Outlook
Grounds managers can either practice independently or be self employed, or work as an employee of a landscaping firm.Those who are self employed can earn flexibly depending on the number of projects and clients that avail of their services. However, the range of income for this kind of profession starts off from 25,000 U.S. dollars to 57,000 U.S. dollars on a yearly basis.The job outlook is also good and is expected to move faster than the average for the other professions.
