Greenskeepers: Job Description, Education, Skills and Abilities, Earnings and Outlook

Job Overview Many people more especially in the Western countries are fond of playing golf both as a form of professional sports and a past time. The golf courses are being maintained so well such that no overgrowth of grasses and unusual bushes and trees should interfere with the playing of the sports. The landscapers and the grounds manager who maintain golf courses in good condition are called greenskeepers. Presently, there are two types of greenskeepers. The Greenskeeper 1 and the Greenskeeper 2. The Greenskeeper 1 create instructions for the Greenskeeper 2 to follow.

Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required

If you wish to build a career in this field, take as much subjects in Biology, Chemistry as well as in Arts as early as high school. As for the post secondary training, an apprenticeship program can be taken for a minimum of 2 years either in horticulture, agronomy or landscape management. Greenskeepers or the specialists in the care of the golf courses should be certified by then GCSAA or the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America or the Turf Managers Association.

Skills and Abilities

The skills and abilities that should be existent in greenskeepers include artistic skills, mechanical and manipulative skills with the use of gardening and golf maintenance tools. Artistic skills are manifested by a very good aesthetic idea of the greenskeeper plans for every work project for the gold course. For the greenskeeper 1, leadership and management skills in supervising fellow greenskeepers of the lower ranks.

Duties

The duties of a greenskeeper vary with the title. The Greenskeeper 1 are responsible in supervising and coordinating the activities of the workers who are engaged in the care and in the total maintenance of the turf of golf courses.

They consult with the golf clubs' green superintendent for planning purposes. They also collaborate with them for the review of the work projects. As an acting supervisor of the Greenskeeper 2, they determine work assignments. Work assignments include irrigating, cutting, fertilizing, raking, moving, spraying and some equipment repairing. The greenskeepers 2 take instructions from the former. They are the ones who actually do the work projects. They are often seen in the field cultivating new greens, moving lawns, operating tractors, watering and sprinkling insecticides and reporting to the greenskeeper 1. 

Earnings and Job Outlook

The salary of a greenskeeping worker is dependent on several factors such as the number of years of working experience, the educational level of the worker as well as the type of employer, the geographic location and the specific tasks and responsibilities he is holding. The average salary per hour of a greenskeeping worker is around 16.99 U.S. dollars.
