Job Overview: Graphic programmers are persons who design and develop software used to work on graphic designs, illustrations and charts for communications, manufacturing, engineering and entertainment purposes. They are also assigned to design computer applications for artists to use in creating posters, multimedia presentations, logos, layouts and other products.
Education, Knowledge and Training Required: The work of graphics programmers is quite specialized, thus people who want to pursue positions in this industry are required to possess formal education in order to qualify for the job. A bachelor’s degree in computer science or computer engineering is essential for aspiring graphics programmers, and they should major in graphics programming in order to become experts in the said field. They should also be knowledgeable about the current programs in the field of computer graphics, such as computer-aided design (CAD), mapmaking, art, animation and multimedia. There are also associate’s degrees and certificate programs which can be taken up to those who want to start as keyboard operators and other paraprofessional positions in the world of graphics programming.
Skills and Abilities: In order to become a successful graphics programmer, one should need to possess a high level of reasoning ability, persistence and patience. They should also have the aptitude for mathematics and not be let down by failed program prototypes. They must as well possess oral and written communication skills and work effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
Tasks: Graphics programmers work just like computer programmers, only that their main focus is on developing graphics programs. They determine the functions of the program , as well as select the type of writing instructions to be used on the program in order to carry out the said functions. They use computer languages such as Pascal, BASIC, COBOL, C++, Smalltalk, HTML and Java, to name a few. They are responsible for giving instructions to the computer by formulating commands and tracing how a program should be designed for desktop publishing should be made.
They sometimes collaborate with a computer systems analyst, and together they interview clients and managers to gather information about the program they are going to make, the functions the program is expected to do, as well as come up with innovations to make the new programs different from already existing computer graphics capabilities.
