Glass Manufacturing Workers Job Description: Duties, Knowledge and Training Requirements, Job Information

Job Overview: Glass manufacturing workers are persons who make glass and glass products by means of different processes. They are usually found in factories and gather raw materials for manufacturing items such as pressed glass, window panes, glassware, blown glass items, bulbs, bottles and other products made of the said material.
Education, Knowledge and Training Required: There is no minimum educational requirement in order to become a glass manufacturing worker, although there are a technical schools which offer courses in glassmaking, which can be taken up for two years. These programs include classroom and hands-on training, and they aim to teach the basics of glassmaking to students who wish to pursue jobs in this field. Some workers on the other hand learn solely by experience, and they begin by entering apprenticeships in shops and factories. After a few years of apprenticeship, they may then work as regular employees in the shops or factories.
Skills and Abilities: Aside from knowing the basics of glassmaking, glass manufacturing workers are required to possess manual strength to lift light and medium weight objects. They should also have retentive memory especially when handling controls of machines and operating equipment in glassmaking. They must also exercise extra care and caution when handling glass products to prevent them from damage.
Tasks: Glass manufacturing workers take on a variety of tasks while on duty, and these include the basic operation of different equipment and machinery used to manufacture glass products. Their tasks include mixing and melting materials, heat-conditioning and controlled cooling of pre-made items glass products, blowing, pressing, drawing, casting or rolling of glass sheets, finishing glass by means of polishing and coating, as well as using other surface processing procedures. They should be aware of different types of glass materials as these require different methods of processing and manufacturing, otherwise the products would be formed with certain defects. Some manufacturers are assigned in operating machines which press, spin or blow molten glass molds in order to form a wide array of glass products, such as containers, cathode-ray tubes and bottles.
These machines are used to transport gobs of hot glass from the supply emerging from the furnace towards controlled coolers, in which molds are placed. Workers in flat glass manufacturing on the other hand operate kiln operators, which process molten glass into sheets and then cooling them until they lose their shape. They are also run in rolling machines, while others shape and glass sheets and attach them to other objects for attachments such as handles and pedestals.
Earnings and Job Outlook: Glass manufacturing workers earn an average of $30,000 per year, depending on the industry they are employed in. Most production workers earn the said amount based their shift, number of hours of work, and their position in the factory. Glass manufacturing workers who are members of unions earn more than non-members, and they also receive more benefits such as leaves, insurance plans and retirement pension.
