Gastroenterologists Job Description: Career, Education, Job Outlook and Salary Information

Job Overview: Gastroenterologists are doctors who specialize in treating problems of the digestive system as well as its associated organs, such as the bladder, spleen, kidney and liver. They diagnose diseases and illnesses, search for treatments and conduct necessary procedures, including surgeries in order to treat the problems going on inside the digestive tract.
Education, Knowledge and Training Required: To become a successful gastroenterologist, one should finish medical school and become licensed to practice medicine. While in medical school, students may choose to focus on the field of gastroenterology and enter residency for at least three years. There is a steep competition for this field of medicine, as each year there are nearly 500 applications for two or three slots towards gastroenterology practice in hospitals and other medical institutions.
Skills and Abilities: Aside from the knowledge and expertise, gastroenterologists should also possess the ability to communicate properly and effectively with their patients, colleagues and other health care professionals in order to discuss the diseases or illnesses, as well as the recommended treatments for the people involved in the case. They must also pay close attention to detail in order to determine the symptoms the patients are suffering from, and they should as well be capable of talking and dealing with all sorts of people.
Tasks: Gastroenterologists perform a wide variety of tasks similar to that of other specialized physicians. They examine the behaviors of the different organs in the digestive system, such as the small and large intestines, stomach, liver and esophagus. They analyze the problems experienced by patients, prescribe the necessary drugs and medications, as well as recommend treatments such as surgical operations and therapy. They also collaborate with other specialists, such as oncologists, cardiologists and surgeons in order to study the disease or illness suffered by a patient, and find out the necessary treatments for such cases. They also provide moral support to patients, especially to those who suffer long-term gastrointestinal problems.
Aside from treating patients, gastroenterologists also spend time studying and reviewing cases in order to come up with new and advanced methods of treatment and therapy. They spend time doing laboratory work learning about the different processes and technologies which they can use to treat today’s gastrointestinal illnesses and conditions faster and in a more effective manner.
Earnings and Job Outlook: At present, starting salaries for gastroenterologists range between $95,000 and $145,000. This can be attributed to the fact that physicians of this regard are high specialized, and the demand for their services remains competitive. Aside from the annual salary, gastroenterologists also receive a number of benefits, such as life and health insurance, vacation leaves, sick leaves, retirement pensions and educational grants. Their salaries are also affected by their skills and expertise as well as their reputation.
