Job Overview A garden worker is an occupation that entails cultivating and taking care of ornamental floras or  plants as well as installing floral displays both in the indoor and outdoor garden settings.

Education, Knowledge and Training Required This kind of job does not necessitate a high degree of graduate studies. Being a high school graduate is already enough plus the training on the basics of gardening that will be received upon employment in a garden work. However, fora more comprehensive understanding of the field of work, there are available vocational courses in gardening and horticulture that could be of great help in acing the routine activites in the job which also serves as a  good credential in applying as a garden worker.

Skills and Abilities
The skills and abilities required for this job are as follows: gardening knowledge and skills such as knowing how to grow different types of plants and maintain every kind of them. This includes choosing and preparing soils and plant seeds, seedlings and bulbs in greenouse or outdoor settings. The expertise in the use of the garden tools such as the rake, spade, shover, trowels, sprinklers, sprayers, cultivators and other gardening equipment must be developed. Also included are the knowledge and skills in administering insecticides and the control of insects, plant diseases and weeds. They may also plot down mulch, such as wood chips and peat moss so as to control weeds and maintain a good soil environment for the plant life maintainance.

Duties

A garden worker can assume different roles as needs arise. This will depend on the scenario in the garden. Generally, a garden worker's duties are flexible. It starts from pre planting preparations and cultivation, to planting and maintainance of the plants in the indoor and the outdoor settings. The tasks involve in the maintainance of the plants in the garden are watering them, exposing or removing plants from the sunlight, cutting of the unecessary growing parts, and more especially the diseased parts, transplanting, pruning, harvesting flowers, fertilizing and weeding. At times,they may need to remove snow, leaves or dead and diseased trees and parts to keep the soil environment conducive for the plant's growth.

Earnings and Job Outlook

A garden worker is in demand both in the urban and rural comunities. In the urban setting, he ma work in the building's landscapes or indoor gardens especially in hotels and commercial skyscrapers. He may also work in villages to maintain parks and gardens as well as in individual households to maintain and beautify house front's  landscapes. The compensation will depend on the number of clients servicing by the worker and whether the work is on a project basis. Usually, the average for this is just around $8 an hour or less.
