Job Overview: Furniture manufacturing workers are persons who build and make furnishings such as chairs, tables, beds, sofas, dressers and desks which would be placed in rooms and halls to be used by occupants. Most of these workers are either employed in manufacturing companies or are self-employed. They mostly do jobs in assembling, restoring, cutting, shaping and finishing upholstery and other types of furniture.
Education, Knowledge and Training Required: There is no minimum educational requirement in order to be hired for the job, but to be a successful furniture manufacturing worker, one should be knowledgeable about carpentry and furniture making. Most people who wish to be furniture makers undergo vocational classes in carpentry and furniture making in technical or vocational schools, while others learn the trade by means of on-the-job training. Furniture makers usually enter as apprentices at a given company for a number of months so that they can be skilled in their chosen craft.
Skills and Abilities: Furniture makers and other related workers should have a passion for their chosen craft, and they should be able to handle various processes properly using their bare hands. They should have manual dexterity, attention to detail and accuracy, as well as the balance and proportion. They must also be capable of controlling their fingers and hands, follow directions properly, as well as physical strength for lifting materials and other tasks. They should as well be capable of visualizing three-dimensional objects based on drawings and blueprints, and work along with others in order to finish a given project.
Tasks: Furniture manufacturing workers have a number of duties and responsibilities to work on, and these include cutting and shaping components which will be used to assemble the furniture pieces.
They study blueprints and designs provided by designers, and they select the types of tools and equipment to use for the job. They cut and prepare the materials based on the given measurements and dimensions, and then these pieces would be assembled, fit together and secured using nuts and bolts, glues and other adhesives. Once the parts have been assembled together, the furniture pieces would have to be polished and finished, and applied with the right coatings and prepare them for upholstery. Furniture makers would then prepare the furniture for another polishing and finishing process, which includes the carving of ornamental designs and other necessary details, and from there the pieces would be ready for packaging, marketing and delivery.
Earnings and Job Outlook: The salaries of furniture manufacturing workers vary on their type of occupation, skills and expertise, experience on the job, as well as the size and location of the business and the clients they serve. Entry level workers and apprentices earn an average of $$26,020 per year, while more seasoned workers may earn a much as $41,530. Salaried employees also receive benefits such as health and life insurance, leaves and retirement pensions.
