Ear Nose Throat Specialists: Job Description, Education, Skills and Duties, Earnings and Outlook

Job Overview Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists, also called ENT Specialists are types of doctors who specialize in specific areas such as the human ear, nose and related structures such as the sinuses, larynx, oral cavity and throat. They may also be called otolaryngologist. They serve to be the specialists to which the general practitioners refer the patients for disorders in the ear, nose and throat.  The illnesses include blindness, sinusitis and rhinitis, deviated nasal septum, tonsillitis, to name a few. They may admnister medical treatments as well as do surgical and some invasive interventions to the patients as the case needs.

Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required

If you want to  build a career in ENT medicine, take as many courses in science and mathematics as possible during your highscool years. A degree in premedical course or any of the science courses may be taken before an applicant can enter a medical school. An entrance examination for the medical schoool should be passed and a medical degree lasting for around 4 years to 5 years should be accomplished. After this, a licensure examination in medicine should be passed before the applicant can be accepted to the ENT program. ENT program that follows may last from 3 years to 5 years depending on the speciality. ENT specialists also focus on one or more of these subspecialty areas as desired:  pediatric otolaryngology, otology/neurotology, allergy, facial/plastic, rhinology, laryngology and head and neck surgery.

Skills and Abilities

The skills that are most important in the practice of ENT are the skills in analytical thinking/critical thinking as well as some of the manipulative and mechanical skills specific to the interventions to the ears, nose and throat. They should have the adequate expertise in figuring out through good questioning or data collection means what the possible disorder affecting the client is, and be able to find remedies for the disorders within the scope of their expertise.

Duties

ENT specialist may practice in the hospital, clinics or be self employed.

To gain clients, they should get some affliliations from the hospitals and contacts from old patient referrals. They start working by asking questions and doing physical examinations to the patients and correlating their findings to their medical knowledge. They may use tools such as speculums, scopes, tuning fork  suctions and some medicated sprays for good visualization of the areas to be examined. After finding or diagnosing the patient's illness, they will then either prescribe medications or do surgical interventions to manage the disease. They monitor the patients condition until they are fully satisfied with the results. They also do follow up check ups as needed. 

Earnings and Job Outlook

It is predicted that specialties in ENT will always be in demand. The salary for ENT specialist may range from 120,000 U.S dollars to 180,000 U.S dollars. Others who have established a name in this field and those who do surgical interventions to their patients earn around 392,000 U.S. dollars or more.
