Job Overview Drafters play an important role in providing the architects, engineers and scientists a clear layout of their working plans. They are the ones who prepare the working plans and the detail drawings of the structures or products coming from the rough sketches and some specifications like the forms, calculations and measurements of the said client professionals. The drafts that they made will be used in the manufacturing process ot be able to produce the exact product or structure desires in accordance to the specified dimensions. These structure and products can be buildings, equipment, road and infrastructures, as well as clothes and furniture.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you are planning to build a career as a drafter, take as may arts courses like elective drafting, and mathematics courses such as geometry, algebra trigonometry and the like as early as high school. Post secondary training is available and can be taken in any of the technical colleges and four year colleges in drafting. Certification in this profession is optional but recommended to the aspiring appicants, as many employers now choose those who have been certified by the ADDA or the American Design and Drafting Association or any equivalent certification body, over those who have not.
Skills and Abilities
A drafter should know how to follow instructions accurately. As the drawings that will be done will come from the preliminary information and instructions from the client. Being accurate and being concise is necessary. Drawing skills and computational skills are also needed in doing the actual drawings with the specifications that are minimized in relation to the size of the draft. Patience in every task to do is a virtue as they deal with the many details and tiring tracings everyday of their work lives.
Duties
The duties of drafters are preparing detailed plans and specification drawings generally. They take these drawings and plans from notes, ideas, or even rough sketches coming from the scientists, architects, engineers and designers. Their tasks however, depend on the position and therefore the responsibility that they hold in the department. A general drafting department has the following staff: the senior drafter, the chief drafter, the detailers, the checkersand the tracers. Senior drafters make design layouts from the preliminary information and ideas provided by the engineers and architects.
Chief drafters may also be called seniour drafters whenever they assign work to the junior drafters and supervise their activities. Detailers make the complete drawings including the information and the specifications within the layout. Checkers verify the work of the detailers and the drafters for errors while the tracers make corrections and prapare the drawings for reproduction by way of tracing them on the new material.
Earnings and Job Outlook
The job outlook for this kind of profession is said to move more slowly than the average for the other professions. This is because of the computerization and the many programs that can be used to create the drafts easily. The drafts now can be done by the engineers, scientists and architects themselves even without the help of the drafters. The range of income for a drafter however, starts off from around 25,000 U.S. dollars per year to 42,000 U.S. dollars. Others who have more clients and work on a freelance basis, or those holding a supervisory position may earn ovver 80,000 U.S. dollars per annum.
