Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you want to build a career in becoming a dispensing optician, take as may courses/subjects in mathematics and physical sciences while still in high school. Although most of the learnings of a dispensing optician learn their skills on the job itself already, it is an advantage to enter some apprenticeship programs in Opticianry and/or complete at least a 2-year associate's degree program. As dispensing opticians handling delicate and small optical objects, they should possess certain mechanical and manipulative skills. They should have steady hands and good eye-hand coordination. They also need to be meticulous as well as possess a certain degree of patience in doing tedious tasks such as adjusting and tightening small parts of the eyeglasses. Communication skills will be useful in dealing with the clients and being able to serve them adequately.

As dispensing opticians,they should be familiar with the methods, materials and various operations employed in the optical industry.
Majority of their tasks include ensuring that the eyeglasses are made correctly and accurately according to the optomoterist's prescription. He determines where the lenses should be aligned in relation to the pupils of the patient's eyes. He further assists the clients in selecting the most appropriate frames to use. He also takes part in doing preparations and finalization of the work orders for the optical laboratory technicians and at times, push the sales by selling optical products.
