Job Overview Diesel engines are very important in powering large vehicles such as trucks, buses, ships, and other heavy equipment being used in construction, farming and roadbuilding. Those diesel engines are being maintained by and repaired as needed by the diesel mechanics. Aside from the diesel engines, they may also participate in the maintainance and repair of the related equipment such as the truck or automobile breaks, heating and airconditioning system and the electrical system built in them.
Education, Knowledge and Trainings Required
If you are planning to build a career in becoming a diesel mechanic, start exposing yourself by assisting experienced diesel mechanics and workers whose work include repairing diesel powered engines as early as high school. There are trade schools and technical school that provide 6 months to two years of training by way of classroom instruction and practical experience which will prepare the aspiring mechanic for employment. There are also apprenticeship programs are available in several trade schools wherein students work during the day, as part of the training, and study during the night.
Skills and Abilities
Diesel mechanics should be adept in doing repair and maintenance of the automotives, engines and equipment powered by diesel as well as gasoline. To be able to fullfill their duties as one, they should possess the technical and mechanical skills applied to the engines that they work with. They should be experts with the use of tools such as pliers, wrenches, et.al. and some testing equipment such as dyamometers. They should also have good problem solving skills and analytical skills to be able to figure out which parts are defective causing the malfunctioning of the engines, and which are in need of replacement and repair. Patience at work is also necessary as they will be faced with complicated engine problems and also will be dealing with the same tasks everyday.
Duties
Diesel mechanics work both in an indoor and in an outdoor settings.
Most of their time is spent doing repairs, rebuilding diesel engines and maintaining them so as to provide a steady power source to the automotives such as trucks, buses and trains that use these engines. They run routine tests and dignostic test to pinpoint the source of the problem and then repair, remove or replace the defective parts. Generally, they work 48 hours in a week yet at times, they may work during wee hours of the night so as to finish the tasks necessary and satify their clients well.
Earnings and Job Outlook
The salary for a diesel mechanic ranges from 23,000 to 36,000 U.S. dollars per annum. Others who have freelance work as well as those who have held a supervisory position may earn around 53,000 U.S. dollars or more yearly. The job outlook is expected to grow as fast as the average for the other types of industries as diesel powered machines and vehicles are constantly being produced and being used for different purposes in different industries be it in construction, farming and transportation.
